Still reading Ogilvy on Advertising, I have been reading the chapters in a muddled up fashion. Today I was reading about Advertising for Tourism. I need to find out who was contracted to create the Magical Kenya campaign.
I love what David Ogilvy had to say, you need to understand what the tourists you are attracting want to see. I am not sure if KWS, Brand Kenya or the Kenya Tourism board think about that as a strategy.
Everyone wants to go on Safari or swim by a beach, maybe visit historical sites like Fort Jesus or Lamu. Maybe we need to attract random bird watchers and see the species we have. Or maybe it’s time we attracted people to visit Turkana and Garissa and focus less on the coats? I don’t know.
But it got me thinking. I don’t know about you guys but dashing to the coast or my rural home for a holiday is old news. I find it tired. I went to Baringo for the first time two years ago and it blew my mind.
It was sizzling hot and humid during the day but the serenity of the lake during the day. I won’t forget the whisper of the air in my ear, it’s warm kiss on my face; the sound of lapping waves as we had breakfast and boats in the distance…heavenly. I love nature!
I would love to tour every single corner of this country, so it’s saving and more saving. I just want to spoil myself and most of all; my Mum. I want to spoil her, actually spoil everyone in my immediate family. Just drive out of town and just explore and have fun.
My mum deserves it; she and my dad worked hard raising us. Shame Dad isn’t around. But I thank God I have one amazing parent around to spoil rotten for all the love and goodness she has shown us as her children.
I can smell the clean air. Aaaaah! Man-o-Man! I can’t wait to feel the cool, light breeze out of this soiled and noisy city. I have a new found respect for silence. Man!
Sitting in silence in nature legs crossed, back straight, eyes closed, inhale and exhale. And a smile comes over my face. Sitting and allowing your senses to absorb the beauty around you.
First observe, then feel, hear, taste and oh! Smell; the smell of an untainted habitat… Ok cow dung doesn’t do it for me. But there is a smell that clean water or air has that just goes straight to your brain and …and….everything is ok! Aaaah! Thank you Jesus for Easter break!
