I Love Me some Me!

There was a day I was having lunch with my cousin. And she asked me what my favourite colour was. I didn’t have much of answer for her. I don’t have a favourite colour, favourite food, favourite song, artist…favourite anything. I can pull a ‘I am not a conformist’ type of response.

But the truth is I just genuinely don’t have any favourites. Because it all depends on my mood and circumstance.

I met a very inspiring young man, he turned 22 yesterday. He is pretty philosophical. He is unique and sweet.
The average Kenyan in their early twenties isn’t prone to discuss Winston Churchill and question life’s existence as we know it. They’ll be more focused on new trends, sing along to ‘useless’ music and focus on getting stoned in their new found freedom.

So as you can guess this young chap is pretty lonely. I know what it feels like to be an odd one out in school.
Being chubby, opinionated, tall and loud with an unusual accent. I was picked on more because I was a chubby kid. I know some of you have similar tales. But what made you learn to appreciate yourself as you are today? And break the yoke of inferiority and conformity.

I like Collin Powell because in his autobiography, My American Journey he was honest. He says that he was a C student, wasn’t a star athlete either. He just didn’t fit in; heck his family thought there was something wrong with him. But look at his legacy. He was a four star general and the first African American to be appointed Secretary of State.

I guess the appreciation of life is appreciating who you are. You may be vocally challenged, unattractive in the conventional sense…you know the person who is told you are so beautiful (long hesitation) …on the outside. Maybe you just have an awkward sense of humour, you get fascinated by cloning.

It doesn’t matter. What counts is that you accept yourself as you are. Understand that we all have our shortfalls. People may not understand you at first, but with time it’ll work out.

This is my theory on life; life would be boring if we were all the same. If you don’t learn anything from this blog, let this be that one thing you walk away with.
Be yourself, because being you is beautiful. Look at yourself in the mirror every morning and tell yourself that.

‘I love me because I am beautiful just as I am’
