Down with frustration!

When I am frustrated I get fixated on food and sleep. I can’t concentrate long enough to read or write. So I let my brain wonder to the realm of fantasy. That’s normally the time I will be pre-occupied with the ‘I need a man’ story. The good news is I may be frustrated but not to the extent of laziness, a marathon to severe obesity or sleeping around with anyone.

I thought about something today. Every writer needs to have a databank of information to inspire their thought and provide you with information. So I chose to put myself to the test. I need to read a book of any kind on any topic every week and share it with you.

So for starters, I am reading Ogilvy on Advertising a book written by none other than David Ogilvy the founder of Ogilvy & Mather International Advertising agency. And an advertising guru of (as some would say) the world. It is a pretty interesting read.

For those of you who may have no clue. Other than being a journalist, I am a copywriter. Please note there is a difference between what a copywriter and a copy typist does. David Ogilvy breaks down the traits of a copywriter as;

“Obsessive curiosity about products, people and advertising”
“A sense of humour”
“A bit of hard work”
“The ability to write interesting prose for printed media and natural dialogue for Television”
“The ability to think visually. Television commercials depend more on pictures than words”
“The ambition to write better campaigns than anyone has ever written before”

Simply put it’s our job to lure you into caring about products that you’d normally not care much about. The craft of deception; because let’s face it; some companies have crappie products but what we do as copywriters is to make you keep buying it.

So the next time you meet a copywriter don’t ask if we deal in copyright law or type things. We write, we create with words and pictures to keep companies in business.

I only wish that copywriters across the country would be treated with the value they deserve.

So you have learnt something new about me, and bit more about what being a copywriter is all about.
